The Owl House is a modern Disney show that ended in 2023, written and directed by Dana Terrace. Other directors credited on the show include Bosook Coburn, Bridget Underwood, and Amelia Lorenz, Stephen Sandoval, Stu Livingston, Aminder Dhaliwal, and Sabrina Cotugno. The show is widely praised by critics and fans for its strong, impactful storyline and well-developed characters. Despite raising some controversy, it was also considered the “last great Disney show.”
While some felt the first season started a bit slow with filler episodes, the show found its footing quickly and is often favorably compared to other celebrated animated series like Gravity Falls. If you are one to enjoy mysteries and fantasy and stupid humor, The owl house is for you.
The Owl House is about a human teenage girl, Luz, that after being expelled from her school and planned to be sent to a summer camp to “think INSIDE the box”(i think all of us would be there is that was the point) she instead follows an owl through a house(portal) and travels to a different realm, inhabited by demons and witches. She then encounters two other characters, a runaway criminal witch and the “king” of demons(actually just a little guy). Eventually she meets more witches her age and after figuring out that the emperor of the realm is evil, they decide to go against him and fight against his plan to erase the demon realm from existence.
The Owl House is a comedic fantasy full of tension, mystery and lots of problems and trauma, like angst about inclusion. In my opinion, the show is more appropriate for teens and adults the further you watch it because the themes get dark real fast, it deals a lot with the themes of death, manipulation, teenage trauma and parental issues and special mention, abuse. It really causes awareness in young and older people all together. The Owl House is a great show, and a good option if you want to find a show for comfort and something to relate to. Even though it’s a fantasy, it also includes a lot of real life troubles such as grief.
Something great about The Owl House is the amount of inclusivity it includes, like the relationship between Amity and Luz (played by Sarah-Nicole Robles and Mae Whitman) which is a homosexual relationship between teenagers. Also luz is Afro-Dominican-American. It is similar to other shows like Gravity Falls and Amphibia (both confirmed to happen in the same universe as The Owl house). It, like them, includes dark themes and fantasy relation, but a main difference between these three shows is that The Owl House was a lot more open on how to address trauma and inclusivity (something Disney hated those days, and now it tries so hard to include). The visuals are beautiful; they know exactly how to portray the emotions the characters are feeling at the moment. For example in Season 3, Willow is stressed and everything around her becomes plants, symbolically illustrating how she lost control of her magic and of herself.
The Owl House also faced a lot of controversy for including homosexuality because it was supposedly a children’s show (It was originally a teen show but Disney changed it to a kids’ show). This confusion caused a lot of bad reviews saying it would “confuse kids,” even though many other productions from Disney, like Sleeping Beauty and Snow White where show princes kissing young women while they’re unconscious, and I don’t see any of these people complaining about The Owl House saying anything about these stories. Whether you like the show or not is up to you; those types of comments did nothing to affect the show’s popularity. In conclusion, The Owl House is the perfect show to watch with family/friends or just for comfort.
