During the visit to Bronx River High, The Urban Assembly (AMS) students had the opportunity to tour the newsroom for the school and meet with their editorial team. Led by Bronx River Newspaper Advisor, Deborah Porterfield, AMS students got a behind-the-scenes look at how the newspaper is put together, from brainstorming ideas to the final publication.
Hawaou Kobeogo, a sophomore, gave us her insight as a staff writer, that joined the newspaper this year! “Newspaper gives us lots of opportunities. We were able to go to Philadelphia for a journalism conference overnight trip where I learned more about newspaper”.
This is the first time at AMS that a newspaper fully led by students, exists! We were extremely grateful for the opportunity to get to go to Bronx River High School. Sharing different ideas and working to improve our writing skills has been an invaluable experience that helps us grow and balance our efforts.
With assistance from Ms.Leshinsky and Ms.Porterfield 11th graders, Aidelys Ulerio, Emely Ramos, Milary Herrera, Jandelyn Henriquez, Maryam Juwara, Princess Konuah, Genesis Malave, and 12th grader, Ahmed Ibrahim from AMS were able to get this tour. This tour was a huge success because the Journalists for the AMS Newspaper learned valuable skills and tips from Bronx River Highs Journalists and head Journalist (Ms.Porterfield), who was previously a real Journalist.
The visit has sparked excitement for these students, and plans are already in motion for future collaboration between the two schools. As both teams work to improve their publications, the hope is that the exchange of ideas will foster creativity and a shared love for journalism.
