On October 30th, tenth grade students participated in a scavenger hunt in the Hayden Planetarium for better grades. The trip was an important learning opportunity in which students could improve their test grades with a scavenger hunt. Participating students were separated into groups. “So, if they did really well on the…scavenger hunt, they were able to replace their grade with the scavenger hunt. But the winning team got to replace two grades,” explained Mrs. Faulk. Despite 10th grade students wanting to avoid the trip, the planetarium trip was 100% mandatory. At first students did not want to come but once they got into the trip, they began to enjoy it once they began the scavenger hunt. “Initially the students were trying to get out of going on the trip because, as you know, here, they feel like trips are optional, but this trip wasn’t optional for this class. It was a mandatory trip. So, at first, they gave me a little bit of pushback, but as we left the school, they were like super excited,” said Mrs. Faulk.
During the scavenger hunt competition was fierce and fun; after all, being able to correct a previous test score is a big deal, especially if it’s two quiz scores.
Students went around the museum interacting with the exhibits and competing with each other while still being sportsmanlike: “There were other groups that were shielding the answers. It was hilarious. So, they had a really good time. There were no sore losers. They were all hyping each other up but also trying to make sure that they finished first,” said Mrs. Faulk. Future tenth-graders should look forward to this trip because it is planned to be done every year, and it really is a fun and educational experience.
“Yeah, I plan to do this every year” said Mrs. Faulk when asked if the trip would be done again.
