AMS wrestling is kicking off this year with something brand new: the middle school has a team for the very first time! Our sixth, seventh and eighth graders are very excited for this new opportunity. It was something that was looked over in 2019, but due to COVID had to be postponed until now. Coach Baker and Coach McNulty are coaching.Angelly Lopez, 6th grade, said, “At all the schools I’ve been to, there hasn’t been a wrestling team, but in this one there is so I decided to try it out.” Wrestling is an opportunity to participate in a sport she actually enjoys, and to wrestle with her friends.
Mykel Flores, 7th grade said, “I feel like they gave me a chance.” He hopes to gain new experiences while increasing his jumping abilities. For most middle schoolers, wrestling could be a mental change he feels excited to be a part of something new.
Damon Sosa, 8th grade, said, “I feel good, It’s an honor to be the first year.” Even though he does other sports, he wanted to add wrestling as a new skill to help with his abilities with takedowns. And given that opportunity while still in middle school will help with that.
Most schools don’t offer opportunities for middle schoolers to engage in an after-school sport, AMS does.
Coach Baker even highlighted that Middle schoolers get to attend their own tournaments: “They were really excited, so I said, let’s start investigating ways middle schoolers can practice.”
