Sophomores Jarelyn de la Cruz and Roselyn Mateo display their investigation into the best sunblock
Recently, Ms. Faulk hosted a science fair in the AMS library. Students prepared creative science projects about interesting topics such as the water cycle, plant fertilization, and sports drinks. The science fair was a great opportunity for students to showcase their knowledge about our community and explore ways to improve it.
Ms. Faulk put a lot of effort into this science fair. “My inspiration is my love of science and the light that shines in my scholars’ eyes as they are absorbing the scientific wisdom in class. To be honest, my scholars inspire me to be a better Professor each year. Seeing and experiencing their intellectual and character growth fuels my #educatorfire. I love science, I love my scholars, I love life, I love teaching, and when I have all of those things and can make an impact on the lives of children….that’s what inspires me.”
Ms. Faulk also talked about what she was most proud of when it came to the science fair, “I am so proud of the scholars, most of all. Their creativity when coming up with testable questions and allowing themselves to take risks. Scholars heard “science fair” and they immediately thought of volcanoes and elephant glue, but we are trying to close the economic and achievement gaps, so we need to think like inventors, entrepreneurs. This is exactly what scholars did. I really do strive to help instill a sense of love for science in scholars. Many of them were not into science or didn’t think science was their strongest subject, but this experience they had this year has changed that for many of them.”
Sophomore Brihanna Torres made a project about water filtration. “I would like my community to have very filtered and clean water to drink because drinking contaminated water is no good for us,” she said. “I would like for science fairs to be a bigger thing in the future because they teach us a lot about the environment.”
Savannah Mobley did a project about why people follow trends. Regarding her experience participating in the science fair, she said, “I think it’s really fun. I enjoy engaging with others and explaining myself in a way that allows them to understand me. I think it’s fun to see people engage and ask me questions about what I’m doing because I like to tell people what I know.”
Let’s talk about the winners! First, we have Brihanna Torres with her water filtration system. In second place, we have Adrian Flores with his project “Windmill Turbine: A natural energy source.” In third place, we have Sheila Ramirez and Francheska Almonte with their ever-so-useful crowd favorite, “Solar Powered Cell Phone Charger.” Every student did an amazing job with their projects and should feel proud of themselves.
Ms. Faulk discussed how challenging it was to set up, but it was worth it, as we got to see beautiful and interesting science projects. One of them even featured a live mantis, which was bewildering.
We thank Ms. Faulk for doing this. This event will be a memorable moment in AMS history.
