At first glance, Sinners (2025), directed by The Tesla Guy and Warner Bros, looks like your typical horror movie about vampires, however its execution, time period and many other factors make it a must watch. Here is a breakdown of the movie Sinner’s and why you should watch it. (spoilers ahead)
Story outline
The movie takes place post World War 1 and focuses on two twin cousins, Smoke and Stack, who happened to be played by the same actor, Michael B Jordan. The ex gangsters open a juke joint(A bar, typically for and ran by African Americans, that is for dancing and drinking) and to do so, they gather people they deem useful to the success of the juke joint. On the night of the juke joint’s opening however, mysterious vampires appear at the juke joint appearing innocent to the twins and their companions at first however their main goal is to infect the others at the juke joint. So now the twins and their companions must fend off the infected vampires until dawn.
Opinions on it
The movie’s use of its time period is a wonderful touch. The story being post world war I, a time where African Americans were still miss treated due to many Americans not being comfortable with the thought of accepting them. It elevates the story by showing the struggles these people have to go through on a daily basis, especially how it was used at the end of the movie to deliver a action packed scene where after smoke survives the vampires, he must fight against the KKK due to them disliking the thought of a black man opening a business.
Another thing done well was the use of religion. Sammie Moore, one of the people that Smoke and Stack recruit for entertainment in their juke joint, is a christian and son of a pastor who struggles on deciding whether to be a good christian or indulge in the night life and become free to do as he pleases.
One of the focal points of the movie is the cinematography, specifically the way the twins Smoke and Stack were shot. As stated earlier, these characters are both played by Michael B Jordan, and so it obviously means that they’d have to be in the same shot. They used many ways to accomplish this but for the most part, they used body doubles on shots where only one of the twins faces or shown or record two separate scenes and blend the two together to make it seem as though they are next to one another. All of this was even done for a fight scene the two twins have due to Stack turning into a goober.
Overall, the whole movie was executed perfectly with all the small things done in the story piling up into a wonderful experience.
