Every Wednesday after school at AMS, the art room turns into a place where artistic abilities are developed. With the Courtesy of the Bronx Museum, students are able to express themselves through art, allowing kids to interact with their true selves and experience new opportunities and events, all without even leaving school!

This program is about students learning how to silk-screen, collage, and other artistic activities, giving students the confidence they need for their art and their everyday lives. “There’s actually a couple of different cultural and arts institutions in New York City that do this program. And this program is sort of funded through money that the city gives to specific arts institutions to work with middle schools and high schools that are local to the neighborhood,” says the leader of the Program, Haley McKenzie Bain.

Currently about fifteen sophomores and juniors (including myself) are participating in this program, with the oversight of art teachers Mr. Azcuy and Mr. McCausland. So far, we have made silk-screened tote bags, explored working with manny different materials, and even made our own screen printing press. Many students have the abilities to create something expressive of themselves, but due to lack of confidence they don’t pursue art or even acknowledge that they have an actual meaning and value to their futures and lives. “It gave me a cool space to be creative and make things that represent my community,” said Jacob Robles, a sophomore participating in the program.
